What is HiLo at DiceCity?
HiLo is a card-guessing game from the DiceCity Originals. You bet and a card is turned face up. Then you guess how the next card will compare with it. Every correct guess multiplies your win, a wrong guess ends the round and loses the stake, and you can cash out after any correct guess.
Aces are low and Kings are high, so the card in front of you tells you how safe each guess is. On a 7 the two sides are close to even. On an Ace, "Higher" is very likely and pays little, while "Same" is a long shot that pays a lot. You can also skip a card you do not like, for free, and keep your multiplier as it is.
DiceCity is invite only and for adults 18 and over. Use the invite link a citizen sent you, or sign in, to play on this page.
How do you play HiLo?
- Enter your stake in Bet amount. The smallest bet is worth $0.10.
- Press Bet, or press Space. The start card is turned over.
- Pick a guess. On most cards the buttons are Higher or same and Lower or same. On an Ace they are Higher and Same; on a King, Lower and Same. Each button shows its chance and what it pays.
- If you are right, the multiplier grows and you guess again. If you are wrong, the round ends.
- Use Skip card to move past a card without guessing. Your multiplier stays the same.
- Press Cashout, or Space, after any correct guess to take your stake times the multiplier.
What are the odds and payouts?
A guess that wins on w of the 13 ranks pays 0.99 × 13 ÷ w, rounded down. Some first guesses:
| Card showing | Guess | Wins | Pays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ace | Higher | 92.31% | 1.07× |
| Ace | Same | 7.69% | 12.86× |
| 7 | Higher or same | 53.85% | 1.83× |
| 7 | Lower or same | 53.85% | 1.83× |
| King | Lower | 92.31% | 1.07× |
| King | Same | 7.69% | 12.86× |
Correct guesses multiply together, so two Higher or same guesses on 7s take you to about 3.4×. A round that reaches 1,000,000× cashes out on its own.
Because every guess is priced from its exact chance, any point at which you cash out returns just under 99% over time. That is a long-run average, not a hint about the next card.
Any single bet pays at most $10,000. In real-money play a note under the bet field shows the multiplier at which wins stop for your stake.
Is HiLo fair?
Yes. HiLo uses DiceCity's provably fair seeds, and the cards for a round are set before you see the first one:
- Server seed hash. You see the SHA-256 hash of a secret server seed before betting. The seed, and so every card, is fixed from then on.
- Your client seed. Your contribution to the result. Change it to any text up to 64 characters between rounds.
- The nonce. Your bet's number on the seed pair, counting from 0.
- How the cards are made. HMAC-SHA256 of the server seed with your client seed and nonce gives a stream of numbers. Each number becomes one card from a full 52-card deck, and every card is drawn from a fresh deck, so the same card can turn up again.
- Checking after you rotate. Rotating the seed pair reveals the old server seed and starts a new pair at nonce 0. It is not possible mid-round, because the seed would reveal the cards. Hash the revealed seed, compare it with the hash you saw, then rebuild any round in the Verify tab.
HiLo uses the same seed pair as Flip, Mines and most other DiceCity Originals, so one rotation covers them together. Plinko keeps a pair of its own.
What settings can you change?
- Bet amount. With ½ and 2× to halve or double it.
- Guess buttons. Two guesses per card, labelled for the card in front of you.
- Skip card. Free, and it keeps your multiplier.
- Cashout. Available after any correct guess.
- Keyboard. Space bets or cashes out. During a round the up and down arrows guess and the right arrow skips.
- Sound and Fairness. The speaker button, and the key button for seeds and Verify.
- Page controls. Favourites (S), Live stats, Theatre mode (T) on wider screens and Full screen (F).
HiLo is played one guess at a time. It has no auto bet.
Tips for playing responsibly
- Pick your cash-out point before the round starts. Mid-round, "one more card" is easy to say.
- Set a budget for the session. DiceCity's responsible gambling page has a budget calculator.
- Long chains of safe guesses still end eventually. A 92% guess fails about once in every 13 tries.
- Skipping a card changes nothing about the odds of the next one. It is only a way to avoid a guess you dislike.
- Increasing your stake after a loss does not make the next card more predictable.
- Keep an eye on Live stats and stop when it stops being fun.
