What is RTP? — Casino Return to Player Explained

If you've ever browsed a casino game lobby, you've likely noticed a small percentage displayed alongside each game — 96.5%, 97.3%, or something similar. That number is the game's RTP, or Return to Player. It's one of the most important metrics in casino gaming, yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. This guide explains what RTP means, how it works, and what each DiceCity game returns.

What is RTP?

RTP stands for Return to Player. It's a percentage that represents the theoretical amount of money a casino game will pay back to players over a very large number of rounds — typically millions of spins or hands.

For example, if a slot machine has an RTP of 96%, it means that for every $100 wagered on that game across all players over time, the game is designed to return $96 and keep $4 as profit. This $4 is the house edge.

It's crucial to understand that RTP is a long-term statistical average, not a guarantee for any individual session. In a single playing session, you might win far more than the RTP suggests — or you might lose your entire bankroll. The percentage only becomes accurate over an enormous sample size.

Think of it like flipping a coin: you know the theoretical probability of heads is 50%, but if you flip a coin 10 times, you might get 7 heads and 3 tails. Flip it 10 million times, and you'll be very close to 50/50. RTP works the same way.

How RTP is Calculated

RTP is worked out from a game's rules: every possible outcome, its chance and what it pays. The formula is RTP = (total returned to players ÷ total wagered) × 100. For a game with 99% RTP, if $10,000,000 is wagered in total, about $9,900,000 comes back to players over time.

For most DiceCity Originals the figure is exact. Each multiplier is priced from the true odds, so the RTP follows from the maths of the game and is the same for every bet. Where a game's options return different amounts (Keno's risk levels, Plinko's boards), its page shows the lowest and highest. Blackjack depends on how you play, so its figure is for basic strategy, measured over two billion simulated hands.

Because the Originals are provably fair, you do not have to take the number on trust: you can check any round you played against the seeds it was dealt from.

RTP vs House Edge

RTP and house edge are two sides of the same coin. They always add up to 100%:

  • RTP of 96% = House edge of 4%
  • RTP of 97.5% = House edge of 2.5%
  • RTP of 99.5% = House edge of 0.5% (typical for blackjack with optimal strategy)

The house edge is the casino's built-in mathematical advantage. It's how casinos generate revenue. A lower house edge (higher RTP) means the game is more favorable to the player in the long run. Table games like blackjack and baccarat tend to have lower house edges than most slots, which is why they often show higher RTPs.

What is a Good RTP?

Not all games are created equal when it comes to RTP. Here's a general guide to help you evaluate where a game stands:

RTP RangeRatingExamples
Below 95%Below AverageSome progressive jackpot slots, arcade games
95% – 96%AverageMost mainstream video slots
96% – 97%GoodPremium slots, many table games
97%+ExcellentTop-tier slots, blackjack, video poker

As a general rule, look for online slots with an RTP of 96% or higher. For table games, anything above 98% is common and expected. Blackjack with basic strategy can reach 99.5% or more, making it one of the best-value games in any casino.

Does RTP Guarantee Wins?

No. This is perhaps the most important thing to understand about RTP. A 96% RTP does not mean you'll walk away with 96% of your money after a session. RTP is calculated over millions of rounds, and individual results can deviate dramatically from the average.

This is where volatility (also called variance) comes into play. Volatility describes how a game's payouts are distributed:

  • Low volatility — Frequent small wins. Your bankroll stays relatively stable, and you'll rarely experience massive swings. Good for longer play sessions.
  • Medium volatility — A balanced mix of smaller wins and occasional bigger payouts. The most common volatility level.
  • High volatility — Rare but potentially huge wins. Long dry spells between payouts. Requires a bigger bankroll and more patience, but offers the potential for massive returns.

Two slots can both have a 96% RTP but play completely differently. A low-volatility 96% RTP slot might pay you back consistently in small amounts, while a high-volatility 96% RTP slot might have you spinning 200 times without a significant win — then delivering a 1,000x payout on a single spin.

How to Find RTP at DiceCity

Every DiceCity game states its RTP in two places:

  1. The game's page. Each game has a page with its rules, its payouts and its RTP, and a guide below the game. Every Original's page is public, so you can read it before you have an invite.
  2. In the game. The game's info and its paytable show the figure for the option you picked, where options differ.

DiceCity Originals: RTP You Can Verify

The DiceCity Originals publish their RTP and commit to a hashed server seed before every round, so each result can be recomputed and checked after you play. These are the figures their pages state:

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 96% RTP mean?

A 96% RTP means that, over millions of spins, the game is designed to return $96 for every $100 wagered on average. This is a statistical long-term average — individual sessions can vary wildly above or below this figure. It does not mean you will get back exactly $96 every time you bet $100.

Is higher RTP better?

Generally, yes. A higher RTP means the game retains less of your wagers over time, giving you a better theoretical chance of keeping your bankroll. However, RTP is only one factor — volatility, hit frequency, bonus features, and personal enjoyment all matter when choosing a game.

Do all slots have the same RTP?

No. Slot RTPs vary significantly between games and even between different versions of the same game. RTPs typically range from around 88% to over 99%. Online slots usually have higher RTPs than land-based machines, with most quality online slots sitting between 95% and 97%.

Does RTP change between casinos?

It can. Some game studios offer the same slot at several RTP settings and let each casino choose one, so the same title can return less at one site than at another. DiceCity's games are its own and each has one set of rules: the RTP on its page is the RTP you play.

What's the difference between RTP and volatility?

RTP tells you how much of total wagers a game returns over time, while volatility (or variance) describes how those returns are distributed. A high-volatility slot pays out less frequently but in larger amounts, whereas a low-volatility slot pays smaller amounts more often. Two games can have the same RTP but feel completely different to play because of volatility differences.
